Medusa by Jessie Burton and illustrated by Olivia Lomenech Gill

Jessie Burton's retelling of the gorgon Medusa's story is gifted to us in the way I have always imagined myths should be. She writes a grand but all too human tragedy, ripe with melodrama. Yet when all the implausibility’s, God's and curses are stripped away, the fate of Medusa and her inner turmoil regarding her lack of agency will feel cruelly familiar to many readers. At times I could almost hear the Greek chorus in my head whispering "Medusa, beware, there is no kindness for you here..."  but of course, you have to keep reading when the writing is this beautiful, no matter the building sense of dread.

Equally fitting to this tale are the moody, fresco like illustrations by Olivia Lomenech Gill, making this a project that immerses you completely. While I was reading, I felt myself to be isolated on the island with Medusa, further coming to know this misunderstood and much maligned woman. Emilie

Description

A dazzling, feminist retelling of Greek myth from the internationally bestselling author of The Miniaturist, stunningly illustrated by Olivia Lomenech Gill.

Exiled to a far-flung island by the whims of the gods, Medusa has little company except the snakes that adorn her head instead of hair. But when a charmed, beautiful boy called Perseus arrives on the island, her lonely existence is disrupted with the force of a supernova, unleashing desire, love and betrayal.

Filled with glorious full-colour illustrations by award-winning Olivia Lomenech Gill, this astonishing retelling of Greek myth is perfect for readers of Circe and The Silence of the Girls.

Illuminating the girl behind the legend, it brings alive Medusa for a new generation.
