Learning to read can be an anxious and frustrating time for children and the people who support them as they learn to read. Helping children become better readers: A guide for caregivers is for anyone who assists developing readers. It explains what reading is and what it isn't and describes what reading sessions might look like with reading to, reading with and reading by children. The reading behaviours of successful and independent readers are listed as are the reading behaviours of less successful and struggling readers. It lists evidence-based ways to respond to these behaviours that encourage and build confidence in the reader. In the book, the correlation between vocabulary development and reading is explored and there are suggestions to develop children's vocabulary. Many caregivers are concerned that children may be making insufficient progress with their reading. Helping children become better readers: A guide for caregivers includes reading behaviours expected in a child who is making appropriate progress by age eight. The role of the listener is outlined in the book as a listener's intervention is often premature and destructive to a reader's search for meaning and accuracy. It is important that the listener knows how to respond.
